And don't get me wrong, I do outlines too.

But sometimes ideas just fly into my mind during the creative process that I feel make the story resonate better. It becomes more instinctive. Which I love. Because it makes the process dynamic and fun.

Yeah, that's why I'm SO stuck on structure... Because for me, those creative flashes often on take on a life of their own and go all wild and non-sensical sometimes... A fortified story structure helps me to reign them back in with a formula, so I can take the best parts of those flashes and save the rest for something else.

Plus, having a structure REALLY helps me when I'm having quote-unquote "writer's block." When you don't have that creative surge, you can keep plugging away if you know what's supposed to happen next, and eventually just WRITING will get you out of the funk and back into that wild writer's mind.

... If that ramble makes any sense.

Good point. Well, I truly believe every writer does structure thinking at some level or another, consciously or not. But I'll try something like that in the near future.

On a side note, I read about how Brian Wood, writer of Local and DMZ, was talking about how he structures his breakout book DEMO the same way you would with short flims. He said something interesting about just taking slices of time and making single issue stories out of them, instead of going the three act route. So I guess writing is really as big as we allow it to be.

That sounds interesting -- do you have a link to the Brian Wood article?
